And for a Friday in Trivandrum attending my dear Nephew’s wedding….. some thoughts……
The Nair weddings of Kerala are legendary, as much for their simplicity as for the Brevity. The Bridegroom keeps the “Thali ” on the brides neck, it’s tied by the sister or Aunt, Garlands exchanged, a tray with a first set of Dress change given to the bride and lo…. all done…. couple Married.
If you were late parking your car or waiting for the lift, the marriage ceremony is all over. Well, all that in the past….. now no more!!
Weddings in Trivandrum as in Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai or Kolkatta are extended Family festivities, starting with selection of wedding planner, mehandi, Sangeet and many rituals and ceremonies added. It’s almost a week long of wining and dining…. fun and frolic.
We just enjoyed a fusion wedding….. bride is half Mumbaikar and half Telegu…. Bridegroom purebred Mallu…. guests from all over the World…. the Sangeet at Trivandrum club…. DJ’s choicest Music…. and free flowing booze….. ooof…. ooof…. the last of the dance floor guests “Rolled over” at 2.30 am.
What made me feel proud and really happy was the traditional lamps being carried by the Bride’s friends which included some young women with hijabs covering their head and some catholics. No matter what religion, what native language, all were one. Kerala epitomises the Secular India.
We all are Indians first and each of these cross weddings further enhances our National, inclusive outlook. May our Young Global Indians build India step by step…. the Secular way….. the Ethical way….. the SEEGOS way.
