And for a Holi Friday….. Holi – the festival of colours in North India but today is Attukal Pongala, biggest woman’s event in Kerala….. some thoughts…..
Guinness Book Record – largest gathering of women in one place in the world on a single day
Kerala is famous for lots, highest literacy, European Human Index standards, Communism, Nooku Koolie etc. etc. But nothing like today, the Attukal Pongala day. Trivandrum – the capital city shuts down and is open only for Ladies from all over Kerala, Tamilnadu, South India and now all over the World. Event in Guinness Book as the largest Annual gathering of Women in the World in a single place on a single day….. Millions of Women….. oofffffff.
Attukal Pongala is also referred as the Sabarimala of Women. Attukal Amma ( Superior Mother ) is believed and worshipped as the Creator of all living beings, the preserver and the destroyer…. all in one. In Sabarimala, Women are not allowed. In Attukal, Men not allowed….. equal justice.
What strikes me most is the involvement of more than 3000 Municipal Corporation Workers who, by 3.30 pm of Pongala day, clean every nook and corner of the city. Not one waste or garbage remains. All Participants follow the GREEN protocol – only biodegradable earthen pots, NO plastic cups, plates or any packaging. Either Vegetable origin or Steel cups and plates which are collected, washed and reused….. Fantastic.
Kerala leads the way. Attukal is a woman’s religious day. All Women….. Mothers, Sisters, Daughters, Aunts….. all can participate irrespective of Caste, Creed or Religion….. Way to go.
