The Honourable Supreme Court struck down the controversial Islamic practice of Triple Talaq or Instant Divorce as unconstitutional.
By striking down Instant Talaq, the Supreme Court draws a clear line between Constitutional Rights and discriminating Social practices of a Religion.
Indian Constituent Assembly way back in 1946-47, led by stalwarts like Dr.Ambedkar, Kanhaiyalal Munshi, Minoo Masani and Rajkumari Amrit Kaur had helped create the Institution. It was and is very clear….. India is Secular…. it will have no State Religion….. but right to Religion will not prevent State from enacting Social Reforms law.
I salute the three suffering women who took the case of Talaq right upto the Supreme Court. Shayara Bano, divorced by Speed Post; Isharat Jahan divorced on phone by Husband from Dubai and Aafreen…. three gutsy women. Hats off to all those who stood by them in this long arduous fight.
The strength of our Democracy is the Constitution framed by visionary leaders of those times. They rejected the idea of a Gandhian Constitution based on the Village as key unit of National Life. Instead they accepted Parliamentary Government Model adopted by leading Western Democracies.
The Guts, Stamina and Willingness to fight, shown by Ordinary Citizens of our country like Shayara, Isharat and Aafreen is the strength of our Country. Let us all support such efforts to build a Developed India, the Legal way, the Ethical way, the SEEGOS Way!!!
