Cheering for our teams…..

And for a Friday in Trivandrum amidst two great events….. Lok Sabha Elections and Cricket – Indian IPL extravaganza…..

My friend Shashi Tharoor is in a tough three cornered fight with strong BJP – candidate K. Rajasekharan and well grounded CPI’s C. Divakaran in Trivandrum. Election is on 23rd. In the other two cities I live in, Bangalore on 18th and my vote is in Malabar Hill Mumbai on 29th April. May the best candidates win.

Indian Premier league (IPL) is formed on similar lines as the English Premier League and the NBA. All 8 teams would play each other in a two legged league stage – home and away. Started in 2008, IPL is the most viewed cricketing league in the World. Its entertainment, nail biting finishes, great excitement and the electric atmosphere in the stadiums has to be experienced. And big….. big money. The brand value of IPL is more than 40,000 crores. Star Sports bought broadcasting rights paying 18,000 crores. IPL was the first sporting event bought by Facebook for digital rights. The winning team will walk away with 20 crores and runners up 12.5 plus….. plus….. plus.

With more than 10 years of IPL, its important that the CSR activities of the Teams are stepped up. Of course the players and teams are doing some good work. Mumbai Indians involved with NGOs promoting basic education to the underprivileged – more than one lakh children have been impacted. Delhi Capitals have taken up rights of adolescent girls. Chennai SuperKings – Green Initiatives etc. etc. Every team is doing something or other. But the great cricket icons can do much….. much more – cleanliness, hygiene, girl child, old age care, female foeticide, basic education, skill development, rural sports, etc. etc.

Let us all support positive development and growth of the Economy and Society, the Sporting way, the Ehical way, the SEEGOS way.
