And for a Friday as the paupered, but still elegant and proud Maharaja returns home to house of Tatas, some thoughts….. some musings…..

Air India – the Maharaja returns home to the House of TATAS

Tata Air Services started in 1932 by JRD Tata as an airmail route from Karachi-Ahmedabad-Bombay-Bellary-Madras route, within two years, broke all records to become profitable in spite of the Colonial masters. True, ethical entrepreneurship ensured the enlisting of the Maharajas of Kashmir, Baroda, Mysore, amongst others to ferry not only mail but high value parcels of Pearls from the Gulf, Mangoes, Papads, Betel nuts etc. etc. Ecstatic gifts to and fro from Maharajas, a true customer oriented and value enhancing service producer. Most successful airline of its time, imagine Singapore Airlines staff trained by Air India re hospitality. Unfortunately, nationalised in 1953 and systematically run aground by indulgent Babus and corrupt politicians. Now loosing almost 200 mn Rs every day, Tatas repossessing is Poetic justice. Spice Jet’s Ajay Singh – the only other bidder – says the privatisation process was transparent, fair and honest. He wishes Tatas all success. N. Chandrasekharan, Chairman Tata Sons, said “It will be our endeavour to build a world class airline which makes every Indian proud”. आपके मुँह घी सखर.

Tata Sons Chairman N. Chandrasekaran and his mentor the one and only Ratan Tata

The transfer of Air India is the first true privatisation in the country, a recognition of the tremendous strength of Professional Management, Entrepreneurship and Leadership skills in the country. Corporate India, over the last decades, has seen outstanding, successful and very ethical. Companies with high Governance Standards ITC, HDFC, L&T, Asian Paints, Wipro, TVS, Murugappa group, Mahindras, Marico..… the list is endless with some good friends of mine – corporate leaders par excellence – Bhaskar Bhatt, Sunil Mathur, S. Radhakrishnan, Soumitra Bhattacharyya, Ranjit Shahani, Uday Khanna, Sudhir Kapadia , Ashok Barat , Prasad Menon, Renu Karnad, Anand Kripalu, Bharat Doshi and…, and so many others. Time has come for every state in India to look at ways and means to improve productivity, enhance efficiency, sweat assets, create a sustainable future with meaningful jobs and business opportunities for our huge young population.

India is blessed with talent, natural resources and ready domestic markets. Let’s unleash the true potential, the corruption-free way, the ethical way, the SEEGOS way.
