And for a Friday as various states get into election mode in the World’s largest democracy, some thoughts….. some musings…..
By mid 2023, India will surpass China to be the most populous country in the world with 1428.6 mn people compared to Chinas 1425.7 mn. But India will have 254 mn in the age of 15 to 24. Also the only large country with average age of 29, with 28 states each speaking its own language, with multiple religions and diverse cultures. India is the world’s largest democracy. 900 million voters elect the Govt at the centre and elections is a continuous process in one state or the other for the state and local elections. Ofcourse there are fault lines. First past the goal post; multi party system has its inherent limitations. Ofcourse there are sporadic violence. But the Election Commission does a yeomen unbelievable task of free and fair elections. However, One BIG issue; Money power and Corruption to fund candidates.
Every child knows the expense limit set for candidates is a joke. It is rumored that for a state assembly seat campaign, a candidate may have to shell 5 to 50 crores depending on the state and constituency. It’s then a vicious circle; Politicians, elections, corruption, business money power, favouritism and political power. The circle continues. Collaborative Corruption is difficult to curb as both “Giver” and “Taker” are winners and only the country and honest tax payer loses. However, in coercive corruption, the “taker” in the act is too powerful and the “giver” has no option but to succumb as he/she is helpless. Honest citizens can no longer be indifferent to the problem. Every honest citizen must find one baby step that can be taken. Our society cannot be cleansed by just being cynical. We need action. Every citizen one step forward.
India, as the 5th largest economy, has huge potential thanks to Digitilisation and Technological advances. India’s time has come. Let’s help build our nation, the Ethical way, the Corruption reducing way, the SEEGOS way.
