And for a Friday after twin celebrations of Diwali and the 60th Birthday of a very dear Relation….. some thoughts….. some musings……

Diwali this year was unique, thanks to the huge Pollution in the Delhi region. Supreme court laid down various strictures, no loud noisy Polluting crackers, time limit only two hours in a day, each state govt to decide timing and it was a huge revolution across the Country. Diwali is unique. It is a National festival of lights, new purchases, children in colourful dresses, homes spring cleaned, some freshly painted, sweets and delicacies exchanged to all neighbours irrespective of caste creed or religion and all enjoy the festive mood. Green Diwali; best symbolised by my friend Dr. Martin Ney the German Ambassador in Delhi. First time in 20 years no crackers at all, but Diwali in full gusto in the Embassy lawns with Rangolis, twinkling lights, Diyas, Mehendi and Tilak ceremony. Across most parts of India, a very different but equally memorable Diwali. We are changing.

60th birthday – “Shastiabdapoorthy” is a big event amongst the Nairs of Kerala, one event now celebrated, conducted and financed by the children and core Family. The Nairs are the Martial Nobility of Kerala with their unique traditions and culture. “Maramakathayam” – empowered women; inheritance of property by women, “Sambandam” – live-in relationships and rights of children born. In those days, on completion of 60 years, a special Temple arch was built in the Family Temple. Longevity being low, living 60 years was an achievement in itself. The entire “Tharavad” – the Nair matrilineal joint Family – would assemble with the Head of the Family – the “Karnavar” – doling out gifts and presiding over the function. These modern times all changed. New laws enforced. Nuclear families spread across the Globe, longevity having greatly improved and 60 is the new 40. Simultaneous fun parties are held, some with “Virtual” presence and all ending in cake cutting, deserts and booze. Last count, more than 14 cakes cut so far at Family / Friends groups. “Shastiabdapoorthy” celebrations continue.

India is amazing. So many diverse cultures, so many differences, so many festivities uniquely Indian. Let us keep our healthy traditions alive. Let us also bring in change. Let us strengthen India the traditional way, the ethical way, the SEEGOS way.
