And for a Friday …..as India commences the World’s largest & India’s first ever Census in Digital mode ….. some thoughts …some musings ….
The last census was in 2011 … so it’s a huge gap of 15 years when so much has changed in the country …… In this Census digital mode data will be collected by Mobile Apps both by Android & IOS …… the scale & scope is humungous & unprecedented anywhere in the world ……36 states & UTs ….7000 Districts …5000 Towns ….6.4 lakh villages …. covering a population of more than 1450 mn people ……. utilising the services of more than 3 million Enumerators & officers ……. the exercise will not only capture the population & demographics …. also the Religions., caste breakdown , languages, education , migration , urbanisation& even the homeless & destitutes & levels of disabilities …….:the census is in 2 phases …. first Housing & Listing …. recording data of Homes , Assets & Amenities & phase 2 population enumeration capturing individual data like age , education , couple marital status & many many more parameters …. best part is facility for self-enumeration on line for 15 days ….. Ofcourse to be verified & confirmed by enumerators ……..
In this census with results effective March 2027 there is an outstanding attribute to ensure the addresses & location does not suffer any shortcomings from any spelling abbreviations or local naming conventions ……. a unique concept ……DigiPin – technology developed indigenously by Department of Posts in collaboration with with IIT Hyderabad , NRSC ( National Remote Sensing Centre ) & ISRO ( Indian Space Research Organisation ) ….. converts latitude & longitude into a 10 digit alphanumeric code tied to a small grid on the ground roughly 4 metres by 4 metres …. This is a phenomenal tool which standardises a micro location across Teams & Devices …. ensuring no inch of the country is left out ….. it improves internal consistency & simplifies checks & balances …. a masterpiece in dealing with such a vast & complex country landscape ……
